How Your Story Can Create Social Impact

Posted by

We all have grown up hearing bedtime stories. Many of us have had the favourites that we loved to hear again and again.

Whether in the form of novels, movies, conversations, articles, or updates on social media, stories have become an integral part of our lives. They inform and reinforce the narratives we follow in our day-to-day lives. It would not be wrong to say that stories are compelling, and they wield a powerful influence in our world.

A good story has the power to pull at our emotions and grab our attention. A great story, on the other hand, has the power to spark movements. It can inspire people and empower the armies of volunteers and donors.

Stories That Have Inspired Social Change

The world is full of extraordinary stories that inspire social change. Many of those stories were able to reach different parts of the world, while many more remain unknown to date.

Among one of the most well-known stories that brought social change is Malala Yousafzai’s story of how she fought for girls’ education in Pakistan and worldwide. Her story led to the success of Pakistan passing the Right to Education Bill 2012, guaranteeing that all children, aged between five and 16, have access to free education.

When speaking during a session titled “An Insight, An Idea with Malala Yousafzai at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland in 2018, Malala said,

“I started speaking out when I was 11 years old and I had no idea if my voice can have an impact or not. But soon I realized that people were listening to me and my voice was reaching to people around the world. So change is possible and do not limit yourself, do not stop yourself, just because you are young.”

If her story can initiate conversations, transform old narratives and craft a better story for humanity, so can yours.  In short, you also have it in you to tell stories that create social impact

How You Can Create Social Impact

Believe it or not but we all can be creative storytellers. In fact, we all are storytellers – through our communication with others in-person and online, through the way we choose to spend our free time and how we express ourselves with the arts.

Each one of us has a different story to tell, whether it’s about who we are, what we have done or are doing now, or what we aspire to do or be. We have the power to act, make a difference, and collectively work to make the world a better place. Talking about the work we do and why we do it can inspire other people to create social impact. After listening to a compelling story, people get involved, give back, and get informed.
